Position Summary
The Graphic Designer/Photographer will play a pivotal role in the Strategic Marketing and Communications Office at San Francisco State University (SF State). This individual will be responsible for conceptualizing, designing, and executing visually compelling graphic content and photography that showcases the diverse and dynamic campus community, its events, achievements, and academic programs. The person in this position plays a crucial role in maintaining the university's brand image through high-quality design and photography that resonates with various stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, and the general public. This position requires a keen eye for detail, creativity, technical proficiency, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Position Information
Photography:
• Capture a wide range of images, including portraits, candid moments, event coverage, campus architecture, academic activities, and more, while maintaining high standards of composition, lighting and overall visual appeal.
• Edit, retouch, and enhance images to ensure consistent quality, visual cohesion, and alignment with the university's branding guidelines.
• Develop and execute creative concepts that effectively communicate the university's narrative, values, and accomplishments through photography.
• Attend and document a variety of university events, such as lectures, workshops, performances, ceremonies, and sporting events, ensuring comprehensive coverage, and capturing key moments.
• Work closely with university departments, marketing teams, designers, and other stakeholders to understand their photography needs and provide visual assets that align with their goals.
• Occasionally travel to different locations, both on and off campus, to capture images that support the university's communications efforts.
• Assign the student photographer appropriate photoshoots and oversee their photo archiving and cataloguing for the University's digital asset management system.
• Independently work on identifying freelance photographers, photo assignments and related editorial work for the SF State alumni magazine.
Print Design:
• Develop creative concepts and design materials for both print and digital platforms, including brochures, banners, flyers, social media graphics, email templates and more.
• Collaborate with the marketing team to ensure that all designs effectively communicate SF State's mission, values, and initiatives.
• Maintain a consistent visual identity by adhering to brand guidelines while seeking opportunities for creative innovation.
• Develop a variety of communication pieces for both print and digital media.
• Work with vendors and print shops to evaluate quality and process, obtain quotes, and select a vendor/printer.
• Responsible for print and production duties.
• Use job-required software applications (including Adobe Creative Suite) and mediums to develop and design materials according to defined requirements.
• Create templates and maintain the SF State branded Canva Enterprise account.
Library and Project Management:
• Contribute to the University's digital asset management software by regularly uploading and updating new and relevant photos for use internally and the entire university community.
• Record and manage all projects with the department project management system, Airtable.
• Manage and maintain photography equipment, ensuring it is in optimal working condition and ready for use at all times.
• Stay informed about photography trends, techniques, and technology advancements, and incorporate them into your work when appropriate.
• Writing specifications for printers; attending press checks and advising/consulting with university clients on publication needs.

Minimum Qualifications
Entry to the first level within this classification requires foundation knowledge in the principles and techniques of artistic and graphic design as well as demonstrated design and artistic skills. This knowledge and skill normally are obtained through a college degree in graphic design, fine arts, or a related field or through technical experience and/or relevant coursework. In addition, strong communication skills and the ability to use and maintain currency with applicable computer software packages and systems are essential to entering this classification.
In addition to Position Skill Level I knowledge and skill requirements, work assignments typically require:
- Comprehensive knowledge of graphic design and production principles and communication theory including a basic understanding of marketing and promotion concepts.
- Strong graphic design skills and artistic ability in order to translate communication needs into an artistic design.
- Solid working knowledge of applicable graphic design software packages and hardware systems and peripherals. Ability to use interactive technologies and to create new methods for combining software and graphic packages to address communication and visual product goals.
- Ability to understand university level curriculum concepts and convey them graphically.
- Thorough knowledge of current campus documents and university-wide publication needs.
- Thorough understanding of printing and other vendor services to prepare specifications for printing and other services. Ability to prepare camera-ready materials and a working knowledge of design and electronic prepress processes used in the production of complex publications.
- Ability to plan, coordinate and direct graphic art communications projects and handle multiple priorities.
- Working knowledge of copyright laws applicable to design work and creative properties.
- Ability to consult and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students and to interpret and translate their needs into effective visual formats
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Visual Communication, Photography, Fine Arts, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- Proven experience in graphic design and photography, preferably in a marketing or communications context.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and photography editing software.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating creative design concepts and photography skills.
- Excellent attention to detail, a keen eye for aesthetics, and a thorough understanding of design principles.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Knowledge of current design and photography trends, as well as a willingness to stay updated on industry developments.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work within tight deadlines.
- Creative mindset and the ability to conceptualize and execute unique visual ideas through graphic design and photography.
- Proven professional photography experience, preferably in a university or institutional setting with proficiency in using industry-standard photography equipment, including digital cameras, lenses, and lighting setups.
