This position is remote. Become a critical member of the National Weather Service (NWS) in its mission to protect American lives and safeguard the nation’s economy. As a member of the NCEP Central Operations (NCO) Application support team, you will directly support the country’s most important weather systems. From the deployment and operational support of weather models support systems to worldwide public data dissemination systems that sustain hundreds of terabytes of web traffic everyday, your role at the NWS will be in support of the world’s most indispensable weather forecasting and hazard mitigation systems. GuideHouse Digital is looking to hire an Application Production Support Analyst, to be an integral part of the day-to-day application operational support of the systems powering the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) in College Park, MD. This position supports 24x7 mission-critical systems hosted on physical and virtual servers in active clustering environments. Duties & Responsibilities • Maintain, monitor, and support complex, mission-critical software systems in an operational 24x7 Enterprise environment • Develop, execute System Integration test plans and report results. • Develops technical designs and specifications for software products. • Research integrated design strategies, product specifications, development schedules, and user expectations into product capabilities. • Uses software development technologies and tools to build, test, and maintain product modules, components, and subsystems. • Automate by developing various Linux scripts (Bash, Python, Perl) to monitor and deploy application support system components. • Maintain a large and complex application ecosystem: • Analyze program logic and logistics; • Provide process optimization and improve efficiency; • Document all code and work; • Working knowledge of database software such as MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL and MongoDB. • Provides technical leadership to lower-level developers. • Interact with customers, vendors and external development partners. • Interact with system stakeholders to field questions on operational configuration, system performance and application support. • Provide clear documentation and standard operating procedures for processes used to maintain data flows within the NCEP Central Operations IDP environment. • Plan & implement new systems and system upgrades into the testing and production environment. • Provide in depth troubleshooting for any developed software running in the Pacemaker clustered environment. • Leverage tools (Vcenter, check_mk) to diagnose system performance issues and recommend changes to improve stability. • Ability to write RCA’s (Root Cause Analysis). • Able to perform rotational on-call support in a 24x7x365 operational environment. • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities effectively. • Excellent written and oral communication skills. • Be a customer advocate by consistently meeting, exceeding expectations and incorporating customer service into all aspects of work. Requirements Required Qualifications • BS/BA degree (or equivalent exp) plus 8-10 years’ experience in related field. • 5+ years writing scripts in Bash, Perl, and/or Python • Working knowledge of procedural computer languages, such as FORTRAN, C/C++ and Python Preferred Qualifications • Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) or Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA) • Experience with scientific data dissemination and observation systems, especially in the NOAA/NASA/DoD environment • Experience with numerical modeling principles • Experience supporting a 24x7 mission-critical system • Experience with change management tools such as Subversion, Bugzilla, Redmine, Git • Familiarity with GIS tools like ArcGIS Additional req: U.S. Citizen or Green card is required for the position. This range is an estimate, based on potential employee qualifications, operational needs and other considerations permitted by law.
